Musings on fanfictions
Part of why I chose annareading as my username, because well, anna or ann, that's close to my name and nickname at home. By the way, I use ann with the same pronunciation as anna, that is 'ahn', rather than anne: 'aen' pronunciation. But I know some people don't get it so I'll just let it slide. Reading? That's my hobby~ I love reading, it's an escape for me. I don't mind what kind of thing I read as well, as long as it matches what I do want to read at the time, so it depends more on my mood lol. I like fantasy fictions mostly.
Oh yeah. Fanfictions. The other side of fandom, I like to call it. Back before ffnet is banned in my country, I read a lot there. I still have my account there that I access with its app, but it's not as freely as I'd like with a browser; I used to have a lot of tabs open for different stories at different reading progress lol. But to anyone who can still access ffnet freely, if you're curious on what kind of things I read on ffnet, I started a C2 there for everything I ever read there. It's actually still in progress since I want to look for things I've read before, but the search is halted for now lol.
And because I started with ffnet, I used to not read fanfiction about real people. It's a bit weird for me back then haha. I do read drama fanfics, tv show fanfics etc., I love crossover fictions, one of the reason I love CLAMP universe so much for the sheer crossovers they did themselves. Add in the fanfictions, and I have a large haven of reading materials lol.
Then I got into Hey! Say! JUMP.
Along my initial search into Jump I stumbled across fanfics, and it was then that I thought, oh, this kind of fictions exist too ^^;; Then I found heysay-fanfic comm at LJ. But well, I was still wary then haha I didn't begin to read yet at the time. But even when I didn't read the fanfics, I have my ships lol. My first ship was yutoyama, or yamajima back then, followed by chiitaro. So I have quite a soft spot for these two. But I also likes all the other ships and I have read all the possible pairings (including Ryutaro ones). I just love when they are close with each other.
I remember the first fanfic of Jump I read. Tsubasaquill's Shadow Boys series. I love her stories even until now, my favourite is Dreams and Drumsticks. I just wish she would continue that horror one with Chinen and the Yamada coffeeshop dramafic.
I also love the exchanges. I looked through the old ones and found longfics about JJrs. and such, chibi Jump, other groups, AUs, canon divergence, wholesome plots and leisurely smuts ^///^ although I am sorry I cannot join the exchanges because I'm bad at writing and following deadlines and keeping in character ^^;; I used to follow the various exchanges but now I'm too old and tired to chase after the new ones lol jkjk for now the exchanges I do follow are YYE and JE united. I do wonder what other fic exchanges that are still active currently.
Well now, besides ffnet and LJ, there is AO3! I love the tags lol. Makes me know what to avoid. Like character death? Sad ending? A whole bunch of triggers if the author would so kindly warn so I could avoid. Like, gory, I avoid that. But sometimes I read them anyway. Did you know there is an 'angst with happy ending' tag? Love that one. And I mentioned months ago that I read zombie apocalypse ones. I love post apocalypse survival fics, soulmate AUs and dystopia too. I do so love AUs of any kind. I don't care what fandom I read it, I just want the story. That's an important point for me in reading fics, they have to have story first. Though I don't mind a lot of things, like I said, it depends on my mood. Whether I want to read leisurely things, mindbending psychological stuff, cheesy romance or hard smut, I'll read it if I have the mood for it. Things I love to read on AO3, I have them on bookmark or saved in my laptop.
Maybe I don't search enough? Lately I feel like I want to read drama crossovers. Jdrama crossovers. Like what if Yuto's character in share house meets his character in risou no musuko for example. I admitted on twitter that I wrote a drabble before. It's an old drabble, very very short, about Kame's character in nobuta meeting Yuto's character in risou. I won't publish it lol it's embarrassing.
I also looked through AO3 and found the option to orphan your works. I think that's a great option for when writers don't want to be associated with their fics anymore... like, I also found a lot of abandoned fics on LJ, and fics that I can't find anymore because they got deleted. Deleted ones are the saddest, I think. I like the fic to the point that I'd like to read it again, but then I see that it's gone. Really sad...
Tumblr... that's also kinda new-ish medium for me? Also it's quite confusing to search, what if the author just wrote it without tagging it? Or, well, I only read stuff from tumblrs that I know they did post fics, tumblrs that I already followed, something like that. So it's not my favourite place and not quite familiar for me lol I've been spoiled by ffnet and AO3, where it's easy to search. AO3 also has exclude tags feature now, I'm building my pillow fort there and never leaving lol.
What are other options to read fics? Oh yes, J mentioned wattpad. I'm not a fan of that medium to be honest, mostly because I can't save the stories. I mean not that offline save in the app like most users mentioned (believe me, I've looked through nearly everything), but saved webpages. I like to save what I read if I like it enough, since I regretted that I didn't get to save some fics that got deleted before. I know it's a measure against copyright infringements, and I've also seen some writers who spoke about their fics being reposted without their consent. I'm sad and mad that happened, but personally I just want to reread them offline for when I can't get internet. I saved fics and stories for my own personal enjoyment, you have no idea what kind of library I have in my laptop lol.
Oh, and app, again? I actually hate installing apps for sites that I can go to with a browser, because having too many apps is really annoying and cluttering up my phone. Like how much memory would that take, eh? I think even if I have 1tb on this phone it won't ever be enough if I have to install app for every single thing you think is quote unquote easier to access on app psssh!
Sorry about that. Ehem.
Okay. Fanfictions. I don't want to start a fic rec for Jump fics for now. I wouldn't know where to start, so you know, if you're reading this, just go and explore. Be free! Well okay, besides Jump fics, on my AO3 if you go through my bookmarks, those are my recs haha. But if I do start a fic rec, I'll put a link here or on the sidebar. If I don't forget lol.
Okay maybe I could mention a few that I remember off the top of my head...
Tsubasa-quill, thank you for the gateway to Jump fanficdom. I don't know if you'll continue the fics I mentioned above, but I'll keep waiting.
Kazuko59, special mention~ I don't know how long you'll take for your next fic or even if you write at all now, but know that I'll always wait.
There is an old Yabu/Tottsu fic on je-rainbowbridge (I think?). It was mind-boggling but I am in love with the whole confusion of it. Also I don't remember who wrote it. Sorry!
Mousapelli with all her Johnnys fics, and also of Midareteku fics, that I actually bought the books.
Holly, or alchemicink on AO3, her fics are relaxing. Seriously. Go read them.
Joana, her fics on LJ comm marchtwentyfour, and I remember one of them saved me on an otherwise gloomy day in 2015 (I doubt she remembers though haha).
Iarmella, thank you for reopening your fics. I thought I would never be able to read your fics ever again.
J-nee. Whatsapp buddy. I have no idea where you are or what you're doing ^^;; thanks for the gift fic last year even though I already know the story ;P
Fic comms that I joined; usagichigo, pisudori-play, hotfruits-fics, scribbleascore, monologue-x... I think there are more but right now I remember these.
Okay maybe I should put up a list because there are lots and lots and lots I have read but I don't actually comment at a lot of them...? Haha I don't know how to give comment except maybe to say that I love the story, or if the story somehow resonated with me I would say so and I'll end up feeling awkwardly embarrassed and then I swore never to comment again...
All the individual LJ that I read their fics, the fic comms, stuff I actually saved (again, all for my own personal enjoyment), I am thankful to them for writing and giving me the chance to read. And now with kudos system on AO3 and heart system on LJ, I sometimes forget to comment. I wish I could keep track on which fic I dropped my kudos and hearts though...
Jaa, mata ne~

I love this side of fandom, giving me more things to read than what I can possibly follow lol. It's just sad seeing some old fics deleted or locked away and the writers move on, but oh well... that just means I have to move on too, right? :'(
Well now, besides ffnet and LJ, there is AO3! I love the tags lol. Makes me know what to avoid. Like character death? Sad ending?
